Most lakes have a single organization responsible for activities - Kinderhook Lake has two. The Improvement Association, KLIA, was organized in the early 30’s to bring residents together to get acquainted and carry out specific projects such as lake clean-up and fish stocking. But, in 1949, the dam, which was originally built in the 1700’s, failed and the lake drained to its original level, about 8-ft. lower than it is today. Valatie Mills Corporation, owner of the lake and the dam at the time, repaired the dam but then, began lowering the water as much as 4 ft. in the summer to provide power. Residents did not know from day to day whether they would have water in front of their homes. As a result, about 200 of the residents joined together in 1953, formed the Corporation (KLC), and purchased the bottom of the lake and the dam so they could control the water level.

Today, the KLIA is primarily a social organization. They hold social events almost every week in the Community Hall which they own and raise money for worthwhile causes. The Corporation is primarily the service organization. It works with the NY State DEC to control the water level, weeds, algae and fish stocking. It is a non-profit, volunteer organization composed of about 250 on-lake and off-lake members who donate $110.00 per year to support the activities. A Newsletter is published several times per year to keep the members, as well as nonmember riparian owners, aware of activities. It maintains a launch site and parking lot for members with power boats and for the public with carry-on boats. In addition, it sponsors a children’s pan fish derby and a boat parade on the 4th of July. As can be seen on this web site, it sells a variety of merchandise, including flares that are lit 4th of July evening to provide a “ring of fire” around the lake. Both organizations are important to the life of Kinderhook Lake.
